Vivo has opened a smartphone assembly plant in Oran, Algeria, in partnership with local company Smart Technologie Innovation (STI), as the Chinese manufacturer expands its local production footprint.
The facility covers around 7,000 square metres and currently produces approximately 2,000 smartphones a day. Production is expected to reach about 6,000 devices daily as the plant expands.
The plant employs nearly 200 people, with Vivo and STI targeting around 600 direct jobs and more than 1,200 indirect jobs as operations scale. The partners also plan to gradually increase the share of components manufactured locally, supporting the development of Algeria’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
The facility comes as Algeria seeks to reduce its reliance on imported devices and build domestic production capabilities. According to figures cited from Ecofin Agency, around 84.3% of Algerians over 15 own a smartphone, while annual demand is estimated at close to 7 million units.
Vivo competes primarily in the mid-range and high-end smartphone segments and also produces accessories and software. The Oran plant gives it a local base to expand output and serve Algeria’s sizeable smartphone market.
