Wio Bank Veteran Launches Blanket in the UAE to Digitize Expat Wills

4 Min Read

Blanket, a UAE-born estate planning platform targeting the specific needs of expatriates, has officially launched. Founded by Anton Pirinen, a lawyer and a member of Wio Bank’s founding team, the platform aims to simplify the process of creating wills and powers of attorney for residents with cross-border assets and families.

Quick Facts

  • UAE-based estate planning platform for expats.
  • Founded by Wio Bank veteran Anton Pirinen.
  • Digitizes will creation in approximately 15 minutes.

Closing a Critical Gap for Expats

Anton Pirinen launched Blanket after identifying a significant gap in the UAE market. The country’s large expatriate population often deals with assets and family across multiple jurisdictions, making estate planning a fragmented, expensive, and legally complex process. Without a registered will, families can face frozen bank accounts and court-led guardianship decisions, with probate processes sometimes lasting between six and eighteen months.

Backed by investors and advisors with experience at Wio and Revolut, Blanket offers a direct alternative to the traditional law firm route. The platform not only facilitates UAE wills but also helps users navigate their estate planning needs in other countries. It currently supports wills for the UK and India, with plans for further global expansion.

From Online Intake to Government Registration

Blanket’s process allows users to complete an online intake in about 15 minutes without requiring in-person meetings. A draft will is generated using lawyer-designed templates and then reviewed by a qualified expert. The document is subsequently translated into Arabic by a Ministry of Justice-licensed translator before being submitted through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department’s (ADJD) notarial process.

Once registered, the official will is stored with the ADJD, and users can keep a personal copy and other important documents in Blanket’s secure digital Vault. The platform also offers “Capsules,” a feature that allows users to securely share specific information or documents with designated individuals when necessary.

Blanket’s service fee starts from AED 799. This is in addition to the ADJD government registration fee of AED 950 for a single will or AED 1,900 for mirror wills, which is paid directly to the department.

A Founder’s Mission to Simplify Complexity

The platform was built to address the common reasons expats delay estate planning: perceived cost, complexity, and a lack of urgency.

“Estate planning is one of those things people know they should do, but usually put off because it feels too complex, too expensive or just not urgent enough,” said Anton Pirinen, Founder and CEO of Blanket. “For expats, that problem is even bigger, because life does not always sit neatly in one country. You may live in the UAE, own assets somewhere else, have family overseas and be dealing with different legal systems at the same time. I built Blanket to make that process easier to understand, easier to access and more suited to how people actually live today.”

In addition to wills, Blanket also provides powers of attorney, allowing residents to appoint a trusted person to manage their affairs, from banking and government paperwork to healthcare matters.
