Google Photos Introduces AI-Powered ‘Edit by Asking’ Feature

3 Min Read

Google has announced new features in Google Photos that will allow users to ask the app to edit their pictures for them. The new “edit by asking” functionality, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, was unveiled at the company’s Made by Google event and will launch first on Pixel 10 devices in the U.S..

Key Highlights

The update brings conversational AI and new transparency standards to the photo editing experience:

  • New Feature: “Edit by asking” allows users to make photo edits using natural language via voice or text.
  • AI Model: The functionality is powered by Google’s Gemini AI.
  • Initial Rollout: The feature will launch first on Pixel 10 devices in the U.S..
  • Transparency Standard: Google Photos is also adding support for C2PA Content Credentials to show how images are made and if AI was involved.

A Conversational Approach to Photo Editing

The new feature leverages Gemini to understand natural language commands, making photo editing more accessible. Users can make specific requests like “remove the cars in the background,” or more general ones like “restore this old photo,” and Google Photos will take action. The tool can handle tasks from simple lighting adjustments to more creative edits, such as changing a background or adding items like sunglasses to a photo’s subject.

For users who are unsure where to start, they can simply ask the app to “make it better,” and it will automatically make changes. The app can also offer suggestions and supports follow-up requests for fine-tuning edits.

Enhancing Transparency with C2PA Content Credentials

In a move to improve transparency, Google is adding support for C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos. The Pixel 10 will be the first of Google’s phones to adopt this standard, which is designed to provide information about how an image was created, including whether AI was used. This C2PA support will come first to Pixel 10 devices and will then roll out gradually to Google Photos on iOS and Android in the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead: Making Photo Editing More Accessible

The “edit by asking” feature could significantly help users who are not familiar with traditional editing tools to improve their photos. For the MENA region, with its large and active social media user base, this intuitive editing tool could empower creators to quickly generate high-quality, culturally relevant content for their platforms.
