Abu Dhabi-based EdTech startup Mental has officially launched FoodStars, the first online Essential Food Safety Training (EFST) program approved by the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA). Backed by Hub71 and Ibtikar Fund, the platform leverages game-based design to transform mandatory vocational training for the food and beverage industry.
Redefining Corporate Training Through Gaming
FoodStars replaces traditional food safety courses with an interactive, game-powered experience accessible on desktop and mobile devices. Developed by veterans from leading game studios like Ubisoft and Microsoft, the platform was created in close consultation with ADAFSA to meet the highest compliance standards. The innovative approach has shown measurable results, reducing training time by 33%, cutting employee downtime by 80%, and improving knowledge retention by 20% through its microlearning techniques.
A Collaboration Within Abu Dhabi’s Ecosystem
The launch of FoodStars highlights the collaborative strength of Abu Dhabi’s innovation ecosystem. As a member of Abu Dhabi Gaming and part of Hub71, Mental’s entry into the market demonstrates the application of gaming technology beyond entertainment. The platform was developed through a connection facilitated by Hub71’s UAE Champions Program, which linked the startup with ADAFSA to create a novel solution for the food industry.
“At Mental, we believe that learning should be engaging, effective, and accessible,” said Hani Abu Ghazaleh, CEO of Mental. “Being part of Abu Dhabi Gaming’s ecosystem helps us reshape how professional training is delivered across the UAE. FoodStars is just the beginning; we’re excited to keep exploring how gamification can revolutionize corporate learning.”
Market Adoption and Regional Expansion
FoodStars is already being implemented by major regional brands, including ALBAIK, Azadea Group, and Kitopi. The platform currently supports English and Arabic and will soon feature AI-powered voiceovers and subtitles in Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam to cater to the region’s multilingual workforce. Upon completion, learners receive an ADAFSA-issued Record of Attendance, qualifying them for the official certification exam. Following its launch in the UAE, Mental plans to expand FoodStars’ availability across the GCC and beyond.
