X Overhauls Direct Messages With New Encrypted Chat And Calling Features

3 Min Read

In a significant move to evolve its communication capabilities, the X Platform has officially launched “Chat,” a new messaging system designed to replace its traditional direct messages. The update introduces a suite of features that positions X to compete more directly with established messaging applications like WhatsApp and Telegram.

From DMs to Dynamic Conversations

The new “Chat” feature fundamentally transforms the user experience by integrating functionalities common in modern messaging apps. Users can now make voice and video calls directly within the platform, share various file types, and gain more control over their conversations by editing or deleting messages after they have been sent. This upgrade signals a clear ambition from X to become an all-encompassing “everything app.”

A Renewed Focus on Privacy

A core component of the “Chat” rollout is a heightened emphasis on security. All conversations, including group messages and media files, are now protected with end-to-end encryption. Further bolstering privacy, the system will alert users if a screenshot of their conversation is taken. However, X’s help center notes a crucial caveat: the current encryption does not offer complete protection against potential man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, which could allow for compromised conversations without the users’ knowledge. The company has stated it is developing additional tools to help users verify the security of their encrypted chats.

Phased Rollout and Future Enhancements

According to a report by Engadget, the “Chat” feature is currently accessible to users on iOS and the web, with an Android version expected to be released shortly. This phased rollout follows a brief pause in the deployment of an earlier version of encrypted messaging in May to resolve technical issues. Looking ahead, X is also developing a voice notes feature, which will allow users to send and receive voice messages.

Implications for the MENA Region

For the MENA region, a hub of high social media penetration and digital communication, X’s transformation into a multi-functional communication platform holds significant weight. As local businesses and creators increasingly leverage social platforms for customer engagement and commerce, the integration of secure calling and file sharing could streamline

interactions that previously required switching to other apps like WhatsApp. This move could position X as a more viable tool for business communication and community management in the region, challenging the dominance of established messaging services for both personal and professional use.
