WhatsApp Rolls Out AI-Generated Chat Responses and Advanced Media Tools

4 Min Read

Meta is rapidly expanding the generative capabilities of WhatsApp with a major update aimed at keeping users inside its messaging ecosystem.

The platform is introducing AI-powered suggested replies, advanced photo editing features through Meta AI, and crucial storage management updates.

Quick Facts

  • AI now generates contextual reply drafts within active chats.

  • Users can edit and retouch photos using Meta AI.

  • Dual account logins are now natively supported on iOS.

Expanding the Meta AI Messaging Experience

The most significant addition to the platform is an expansion of the “Writing Help” tool, initially introduced last August to help users rephrase or adjust the tone of their texts.

With the latest update, WhatsApp will proactively generate drafted responses based on the context of active conversations.

Meta’s strategy here is clear: build text-generation tools directly into the chat interface to deter users from relying on external applications like ChatGPT for drafting messages.

To access the capability, users tap the chat bar, select the stickers icon, and choose the sparkledust icon that signifies Meta AI.

Despite the introduction of AI scanning message context to suggest text, Meta claims that all chats remain private when using the Writing Help feature.

Advanced Storage and Platform Flexibility

Beyond text generation, Meta AI is also taking over image modification. Users can now touch up photos directly within a chat thread.

The AI tools allow users to remove distracting background elements, alter the backdrop entirely, or apply new visual styles to their images before hitting send.

The platform is also addressing a long-standing user pain point: storage bloat. WhatsApp now enables users to identify and delete large media files within specific chats without wiping the entire conversation history.

For platform interoperability, WhatsApp has enabled chat history transfers from iOS to Android and vice versa.

Additionally, iOS users can now stay logged into two separate WhatsApp accounts simultaneously—a feature previously restricted to Android devices.

The app will also begin suggesting specific stickers in real-time as users type emojis into the chat bar.

Impact on the MENA Tech Scene

While this is a global rollout, the implications for the Middle East and North Africa are significant due to the region’s massive WhatsApp penetration.

In markets like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, WhatsApp is not just a personal messaging app; it is a primary communication layer for startups, venture capitalists, and informal business transactions.

Founders and sales teams relying on WhatsApp for quick client interactions or conversational commerce will find the AI drafting tools particularly useful for scaling their response rates.

Furthermore, the ability to manage dual accounts natively on iOS simplifies operations for MENA professionals who frequently juggle personal and business numbers on single devices.
