The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has initiated a strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, marking a significant commitment to sustainability within Qatar’s academic sector. To accelerate this goal, the university has signed a memorandum of understanding with Mannai Energy W.L.L. to bolster its energy efficiency and develop sustainable infrastructure across its campus.
Quick Facts
- UDST targets full carbon neutrality by 2030.
- New partnership established with Mannai Energy.
- Focus includes solar energy and EV infrastructure.
Charting the Path to a Green Campus
The collaboration with Mannai Energy sets out a clear roadmap for UDST’s green transition. The partnership will begin with a comprehensive assessment of the campus’s current energy consumption and emissions to establish environmental performance metrics.
Key areas of focus include exploring photovoltaic solar energy opportunities, improving the efficiency of existing buildings and facilities, and supporting a shift toward sustainable mobility. This includes developing electric vehicle charging infrastructure and evaluating the electrification of the university’s vehicle fleet.
Dr. Salem Al Naemi, President of UDST, stated, “Achieving carbon neutrality is one of our key strategic priorities. We are committed to integrating sustainability principles across all our academic and operational activities, reflecting our role as a leading applied university preparing a generation capable of developing sustainable solutions.”
He added, “Collaborating with industry partners such as Mannai Energy is essential to accelerating this transition, enabling us to translate our ambitions into tangible, real-world impact.”
Aligning with Qatar’s National Vision
This initiative positions UDST as a practical model for clean energy implementation, directly aligning with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. The university aims to transform its campus into a living platform for sustainability, where applied education is connected with real-world environmental practices.
Mr. Khalid Ahmad Al-Mannai, Vice Chairman-Executive Committee at Mannai Energy, commented, “Mannai Energy is proud to support UDST on its Net Zero journey. This collaboration aligns with our focus on enabling low‑carbon energy solutions and supporting institutions in developing practical, future‑ready decarbonization strategies. Together, we aim to contribute to Qatar’s broader sustainability and energy transition goals.”
Beyond infrastructure, UDST is also focused on promoting a culture of sustainability through awareness programs, workshops, and educational initiatives for its students, faculty, and staff.
