UAE HealthTech Giant M42 Launches Global AI Kidney Health Assistant

4 Min Read

Abu Dhabi-based global health company M42 has launched kidney.com, a new AI-powered platform designed to provide free, personalized education on kidney health. Developed in partnership with its renal care subsidiary Diaverum, the tool aims to empower patients and tackle the rapidly growing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The platform is immediately available in the UAE, France, Germany, Portugal, and the UK, with plans for further expansion.

Quick Facts

  • Free AI-powered kidney health education assistant.
  • Launched in the UAE and four European countries.
  • Developed with over 30 nephrologists across 13 countries.

Addressing a Costly Global Health Crisis

Chronic kidney disease is a significant and expensive challenge for health systems worldwide. In Europe alone, the condition incurs annual costs estimated at €140 billion. The UAE is also facing a rising challenge, with CKD prevalence estimated to be between 4% and 5% among adults, a figure that increases sharply with age. M42’s platform is a direct response to this trend, aiming to improve patient outcomes through early education and proactive self-management. Studies show that well-informed patients are less likely to require hospitalization or emergency room visits, reducing the strain on healthcare infrastructure.

Dimitris Moulavasilis, Group Chief Executive Officer at M42, stated, “kidney.com harnesses the power of advanced, natural-language AI to help address one of the world’s fastest-growing lifestyle-related conditions. This is a prime example of how responsible AI can make care smarter, empowering people to manage, prevent and ultimately reverse the trajectory of chronic kidney disease.”

Clinically-Driven AI, Not a General Chatbot

Unlike general-purpose AI models, kidney.com is a specialized tool built on a foundation of clinical expertise. The platform was developed in collaboration with more than 30 nephrologists, physicians, and nurses. Its conversational AI was trained on trusted clinical sources and refined through over 14,000 chat interactions during its testing phase.

The company emphasizes that kidney.com is not a medical device and is not designed to diagnose or recommend treatment. Instead, its purpose is to complement professional medical guidance by translating complex medical knowledge into accessible information, fostering more informed conversations between patients and their healthcare providers.

“Education has always been at the heart of good medicine,” said Dr. Fernando Macario, Chief Medical Officer at M42. “kidney.com translates complex, specific renal care knowledge into simple, evidence-based guidance that enhances, not replaces, the vital role of clinicians. It supports healthcare teams by fostering informed conversations and shared decision-making.”

Personalised Education and Accessibility

The platform offers an interactive and adaptive learning experience tailored to each user’s needs. Features include multilingual support, with interfaces live in English, Arabic, French, German, and Portuguese. To broaden accessibility, it also incorporates voice control and a function for interpreting product labels via file upload.

Rafael Romanini, Chief Executive Officer of Diaverum, commented, “With kidney.com, we’re extending that philosophy into the digital world, using AI-powered education to make kidney health knowledge accessible, relevant and actionable for everyone, anywhere, 24/7. This initiative reflects our broader commitment to helping people live fulfilling lives by slowing or even preventing disease progression.”
