Morocco’s electronic gaming sector is experiencing significant growth, driven by an expanding base of startups and a rising number of young developers. This momentum is positioning the country as a key player in the creative economy, with a clear strategy to dominate the African gaming market.
Quick Facts
- Over 100 gaming startups now active in Morocco.
- Strategic goal to become Africa’s top gaming hub by 2030.
- Faces challenges in early-stage funding and console market access.
Climbing the Ranks
The country’s progress is already measurable. Nesrine Souissi, Director of Gaming Industry Development at the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, confirmed that Morocco has climbed from fifth place in Africa in 2024 to fourth in 2025.
“The strategic goal is to reach the number one spot on the continent by 2030,” Souissi stated during a meeting organized by the Policy Center for the New South.
A Regional Hub in the Making
Morocco’s ambition is to establish itself as the primary regional hub for electronic gaming in Africa. This goal is supported by a growing pool of young talent, with over 2,000 developers working in the field and more than 150 associations promoting gaming culture nationally.
The ecosystem is also attracting attention from foreign investors, particularly from France and the UAE, who have contributed to launching development studios within the country. Souissi noted that this combination of local talent and international investment makes the 2030 target achievable.
Economic Impact Beyond Gaming
The gaming industry is one of the largest cultural and creative sectors globally, outperforming both film and music in economic terms with a market size exceeding $300 billion. According to Souissi, the sector offers a wide range of employment opportunities, encompassing over 80 different professions.
Furthermore, she highlighted that the skills developed in the gaming industry are highly transferable. Expertise in design, programming, and modern technologies acquired by Moroccan youth can be applied to other industrial sectors, including automotive and aerospace.
Funding and Distribution Hurdles
Despite the positive momentum, the Moroccan gaming sector faces notable challenges. The most significant obstacle is securing funding during the initial pre-production phase. Souissi explained that young developers often have to self-finance their projects before they can attract investors.
Another challenge is gaining access to modern distribution technologies, especially for home game consoles. The local industry’s focus remains primarily on PC and smartphone games, as entering the console market requires larger investments and advanced technical capabilities. Overcoming this hurdle will require enhanced collaboration between the public and private sectors to expand Morocco’s presence in the global gaming arena.
