Masdar City Launches Biosphere Labs to Fast-Track Biotech and DeepTech Startups in Abu Dhabi

4 Min Read

Masdar City has launched Biosphere Labs, the GCC’s first commercially scaled shared laboratory, in a significant move to lower the entry barriers for startups in biotechnology, life sciences, and deep tech. Announced at the BIO International Convention 2026, the facility directly tackles one of the biggest challenges for science-driven ventures: the prohibitive cost and time needed to build specialized lab infrastructure.

Quick Facts

  • What: GCC’s first commercial shared lab facility.
  • For: Biotech and deep-tech startups.
  • Goal: Reduce startup costs and time-to-market.

A ‘Plug-and-Play’ Model to Lower Startup Barriers

For early-stage founders, Biosphere Labs is a game-changer. It replaces the months—and millions—typically spent building compliant lab environments with a ready-to-use alternative. Startups gain immediate access to lab bench space, advanced equipment, and operational support within a fully integrated life sciences ecosystem.

Developed with M42 and Attentive Science, the facility operates as a plug-and-play innovation hub where companies can build, test, and commercialize technologies in a single location. It also serves as a soft-landing platform for global startups eyeing the Middle East, offering a direct entry point into Abu Dhabi’s growing life sciences cluster.

Anchoring the HELM Life Sciences Cluster

The new lab strengthens Masdar City’s HELM cluster—a dedicated zone for health, longevity, and advanced biotechnology. Biosphere Labs joins an impressive roster of tenants including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Insilico Medicine, and the Abu Dhabi Biobank. This proximity gives founders direct access to a network of potential partners, customers, and investors within one innovation district.

The addition of Biosphere Labs further solidifies Abu Dhabi’s ecosystem, which already supports over 2,000 organizations in the Masdar City Free Zone, including clean-tech startups backed by The Catalyst accelerator.

Backing Scientific Breakthroughs and IP Creation

Government and industry leaders framed the launch as a critical enabler for the local innovation economy. H.E. Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said the facility “provides researchers, startups and biotechnology companies with the infrastructure needed to build, test and scale new technologies.”

Ahmed Baghoum, CEO of Masdar City, described the initiative as a “defining milestone” in the city’s strategy. “Masdar City was designed to be a test bed, a place where new models are not just imagined but demonstrated, and Biosphere Labs is precisely that,” he stated. “We are proud to help create the conditions for scientific innovation by removing barriers, attracting global expertise, and giving researchers, startups and biotechnology companies the platform they need.”
