The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has launched the country’s first Agentic AI assistants for the meteorological sector, rolling out a comprehensive roadmap to integrate the technology across its services. This move aligns with the UAE’s national strategy to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI in government operations to build a more efficient and proactive system.
Quick Facts
- UAE’s first Agentic AI for meteorology.
- Two assistants launched: Al-Rasid and Forecaster Assistant.
- AI augments human experts, not replaces them.
AI as a Partner, Not a Replacement
The initiative introduces a network of autonomous intelligent agents on a unified platform to support specialists in data analysis, reporting, and forecasting. However, the NCM stresses that human expertise remains central to its operations.
Dr. Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous, Director General of the NCM and President of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), clarified the role of the new technology. “We do not see artificial intelligence as a substitute for human expertise, but rather as a knowledge partner that enhances the capabilities of specialists by providing more advanced tools for data analysis, risk assessment, and timely decision-making,” he stated.
Al Mandous confirmed that experts will retain full authority over all final decisions, with AI serving to improve speed, efficiency, and accuracy.
Meet Al-Rasid and Forecaster Assistant
As part of the initial phase, NCM has deployed two intelligent assistants to work alongside its meteorologists.
Al-Rasid functions as a 24/7 monitoring and early warning tool. It continuously analyzes data from weather stations, radars, satellites, and seismic networks, issuing immediate alerts for unusual developments. It also generates up-to-date national weather briefings and proactive summaries of expected conditions.
The Forecaster Assistant is a decision-support tool that monitors numerical weather prediction data, compares outputs from multiple global models, and drafts preliminary weather bulletins. This allows human forecasters to focus on scientific analysis and make faster, more informed operational decisions.
Roadmap for Expanded AI Integration
The NCM’s roadmap includes the gradual expansion of Agentic AI into other operational areas, including climate services, air quality monitoring, aviation meteorology, and media communications.
This expansion is supported by a comprehensive governance framework designed to protect national data, ensure the explainability of AI outputs, and maintain full traceability of processes. All AI-generated information remains subject to review and approval by qualified specialists before publication, adhering to international best practices in AI governance.
About The National Centre of Meteorology
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) provides a range of services related to meteorology, seismology, and hydrology for various sectors in the United Arab Emirates. Its mission is to enhance national development by delivering accurate and timely meteorological data, forecasts, and warnings to protect lives and property.
