Abu Dhabi’s Athar+ Drives Social Innovation with Hackathon Focused on Family Wellbeing

Athar+, Abu Dhabi’s first hub dedicated to social impact and operated by the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, has concluded the second edition of its HACK4IMPACT hackathon. The initiative gathered innovators and entrepreneurs to create solutions aimed at tackling key family-related social priorities within the emirate.

From 102 Applications to Targeted Solutions

The event drew significant interest from the local community, filtering 102 initial applications down to 68 shortlisted candidates, with 48 innovators ultimately participating. Over three days, teams worked on developing practical solutions centered on three core themes: strengthening family foundations, improving financial wellbeing for parents, and supporting families who are caring for aging parents.

The hackathon culminated in a closing ceremony where teams presented their final concepts to a judging panel. The event was attended by His Excellency Abdullah Al Ameri, Director General of the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, and His Excellency Salem AlShamsi, Executive Director of Social Incubation and Contracting at Ma’an, who awarded the winning teams.

Fostering a Culture of Collective Impact

The initiative reflects the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an’s broader strategy to build a robust ecosystem for social entrepreneurs in Abu Dhabi by providing mentorship, expertise, and growth opportunities.

“The second edition of HACK4IMPACT highlighted the power of collaboration and social innovation in addressing community priorities,” said His Excellency Salem AlShamsi. “Through Athar+, we remain committed to empowering innovators and social entrepreneurs to develop sustainable solutions that create meaningful social impact.”

He added, “I would like to congratulate all participants for their creativity, dedication, and commitment to developing solutions that support family wellbeing and strengthen social cohesion.”

About the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an

Established in 2019 by the Department of Community Development Abu Dhabi (DCD), The Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an is the Abu Dhabi government’s official channel to receive social contributions. It aims to unite community efforts and foster a culture of giving by collecting contributions and transparently directing them towards social priorities. The Authority empowers social enterprises and promotes volunteering to build a cohesive community across the emirate.
