UAE’s Space42 successfully tests Direct-to-Device SatelliteMessaging on Android, paving way for Commercial Launch

4 Min Read

Abu Dhabi-based AI and SpaceTech company Space42 has successfully completed tests for Direct-to-Device (D2D) SMS and SOS services on standard Android smartphones in the UAE. The trial, conducted in partnership with global Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) service provider Skylo Technologies, confirmed two-way connectivity using Space42’s Thuraya-4 next-generation satellite, marking a significant step towards eliminating mobile black spots across the country.

Quick Facts

  • Successful D2D SMS & SOS test in the UAE.
  • Conducted on standard, unmodified Android phones.
  • No additional hardware or accessories required.
  • Commercial launch expected by end of 2024.

Bridging the Connectivity Gap

The test demonstrated a direct link between a standard Android device and a satellite messaging device, validating the potential for universal connectivity. By integrating Skylo’s 3GPP-compliant NTN platform, the service allows standard phones to send and receive messages via satellite without needing special chips or hardware. This development is crucial for extending mobile coverage to remote areas with limited or no terrestrial networks, such as deserts, mountains, and maritime zones.

“The focus on Direct-to-Device capability forms the core of our strategy to become a global leader in Non-Terrestrial Networks,” said Ali Al Hashmi, CEO of Space Services at Space42. “The successful test with Skylo proves that Thuraya-4 is equipped to provide carrier-grade, resilient messaging directly to devices, extending access to enterprises, governments, mobile operators, and consumers.”

A Standardized Approach to Satellite Communication

For mobile network operators, the successful test confirms that D2D messages can be delivered through their existing SIM and identity framework without requiring changes to their core infrastructure. This standardized approach simplifies adoption and ensures a smooth user experience.

“Standards are what let satellite messaging work on the phone already in your pocket, over the network you already use,” explained Parth Trivedi, CEO and co-founder of Skylo. “With Space42, we’ve validated two-way SMS and SOS on standard Android devices over Thuraya-4… A clear step toward commercial service, and a foundation for what comes next.”

Pending regulatory approvals, Space42 expects to roll out the commercial D2D messaging services towards the end of the year. The partners are also developing further capabilities on the same NTN layer, including location sharing, IoT data transmission, and automotive connectivity, with future rollouts planned.
