The Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority (ADHA) has initiated a new project to scientifically document emerging date palm varieties, creating an official framework to protect intellectual property and preserve the UAE’s agricultural heritage. The announcement was made during the 22nd Liwa Dates Festival.

Protecting Rights and Supporting Sustainability
The project, launched under the slogan “Scientific Documentation… Protecting Rights… Supporting Sustainability,” aims to establish a formal process for recognizing and cataloging new date palm types. This move is designed to support the UAE’s commitment to agricultural innovation within one of its most culturally important sectors.
Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, stated that the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing support for agriculture and the date palm, which is central to the nation’s identity.
“The launch of the project reflects the wise vision and unwavering support of the UAE’s leadership for the agricultural sector, particularly the blessed date palm tree, which represents a cornerstone of the United Arab Emirates’ national identity and cultural heritage,” said Al Mazrouei.
He added that documenting new varieties will help create unified scientific standards and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position in heritage sustainability and agricultural development.
A Nod to Farmer Innovation
The project also aims to formally acknowledge the contributions of farmers who are key to developing new crop varieties.
Abdullah Mubarak Al Muhairi, Acting Director General of the ADHA, highlighted this aspect of the initiative.
“The project celebrates farmers’ innovations by officially recognizing and cataloging new date palm varieties according to specific standards and requirements,” Al Muhairi explained. “This will help preserve the UAE’s rich agricultural heritage and ensure it is passed on to future generations as a distinctive Emirati product.”
