Nama Water Services has launched a pilot project in Oman to cultivate camelina, a crop used in sustainable biofuel production, in partnership with Hema Energy.
The project will use recycled water to irrigate the crop, testing how treated wastewater can support sustainable agriculture and cleaner energy production. According to the announcement, the initiative aims to contribute to water and food security, reduce carbon emissions and support Oman’s green economy.
The pilot will also assess camelina’s carbon sequestration potential and evaluate the crop’s economic and commercial viability for larger-scale cultivation. Nama Water Services will supply the recycled water, while Hema Energy will manage the technical implementation, operations and data analysis.
Sultan Qaboos University will provide research and technical validation. The Environment Authority will oversee environmental compliance, while the Oman Net Zero Center will help align the project with the country’s net-zero targets.
