A forum in Damascus examined how Syria can strengthen its digital economy and freelance sector, with discussions focused on current challenges, growth opportunities and practical steps to support the ecosystem.
Organised by the Syrian Development Organization in partnership with the International Forum for Development Organizations (IFDO), the event brought together government representatives, civil society groups, private-sector companies, development organisations and freelancers at the Caesar Palace Hotel.
Discussions covered digital economy education and training, legal recognition and social protection for freelancers, digital connectivity, electronic payments, partnerships and funding for pilot initiatives.
Majd al-Din Abu Hilal, director of program integration at the Syrian Development Organization, said the forum aimed to develop a roadmap for digital work in Syria and build an integrated system to support the sector.
Participants also highlighted the potential for Syrian workers to access opportunities beyond the local market by developing their technical skills and collaborating with companies and clients internationally. Speakers stressed that progress would require stronger legislation, improved technical infrastructure and closer cooperation between public institutions, businesses and development organisations.
