Syria won two medals at the 2026 International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), marking the country’s first participation in the competition held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
According to an announcement by the Syrian Computer Society, student Kamal Al-Faqir won a silver medal, while George Yazji received a bronze medal. The event brought together nearly 500 students from more than 106 countries.
The society said the results followed a national preparation process that included identifying talented students, selecting and training participants, and forming Syria’s national team. The team was led in Astana by Ahmad Handy, who also helped establish and manage Syria’s participation pathway and launch the Syrian Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence.
The announcement credited students, their families, coaches, and scientific and organisational committees for supporting the team. It also acknowledged financial and institutional support from Clinlab, Syriatel, Al Baraka Syria, the Syrian Forum, Tecore and BeeOrder.
The medals represent an important international result for Syrian students in artificial intelligence and technology, according to the Syrian Computer Society.
