OpenAI has expanded its GPT-6 lineup with updated versions of its smaller Sol and Luna models, offering lower API pricing and claimed improvements in accuracy.
The company said the new models are available at half the cost of the GPT-5.6 versions, attributing the reduction to improvements in caching and inference. Sol is positioned for more complex work, including coding, while Luna targets high-volume tasks such as document summaries, information extraction and quick answers.
OpenAI also said GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor in the company’s internal factuality evaluation, which uses anonymised real-world conversations where users flagged model errors. It added that the model reaches reliability comparable to GPT-6 Astra at a lower cost.
The updated models are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts, as well as through the ChatGPT API. Luna is also available in the desktop app and for Free and Go users. OpenAI said it would gradually roll out both models across the ChatGPT app and website.
The release comes as competition in the AI model market intensifies, with Anthropic launching an updated version of Opus shortly before OpenAI’s announcement.
