Algeria has moved its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy from planning into implementation, following a meeting to review progress on priority projects and sectoral funding needs.
The Data and Infrastructure Committee identified 17 infrastructure operations and 14 data-related operations for 2026, focused on preparing for the equipment needed to localize AI applications. The meeting also discussed creating a complex that would bring together public and private economic institutions to strengthen national technological and economic capabilities.
An updated draft decree establishing the National Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data was approved and will proceed through further legal procedures.
Other committees reported progress across training, research, funding and international cooperation. The Continuous Training in AI Committee outlined 85 sector-specific training operations, while the AI Doctorate Committee set out training areas for a PhD competition planned for November 2026.
The Funding Committee presented potential support from public institutions, national funds, banks, international sources and the private sector, as well as returns from AI applications. The National Thematic Research Network in AI said strategy operations would be integrated into National Research Projects starting in October 2026.
The implementation phase will focus on infrastructure, data, skills, language models, research and international collaboration as Algeria seeks to use AI to support development and innovation.
