OpenAI has launched Dots, a personal AI assistant designed to pursue user-defined goals continuously in the background with limited oversight.
Announced at the company’s DevDay event, Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra and are designed to work independently of a specific device or interface. Users can create a primary Dot, give it a name and customise it, with OpenAI saying multiple Dots could eventually work together on a user’s behalf.
Dots are available from Tuesday in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. They can also be launched through Codex or ChatGPT.
OpenAI said Dots could monitor customer feedback and help implement software fixes, or rerun scientific analyses as new experimental data becomes available. Users can communicate with them through Slack, Teams and other organisational platforms, while text-message support is planned for a later release.
The company is also developing specialist Dots with dedicated identities, credentials and tools. OpenAI said it is working with Microsoft to integrate Dots with the company’s Agent 365 security controls.
The launch packages capabilities previously available through Codex and other agentic tools into a product focused on independent action, with a cartoon-style design intended to make the software more approachable.
