Anthropic has released Sonnet 5.5, the latest version of its mid-tier AI model, positioning it as a faster and lower-cost assistant for everyday work such as coding and creating office documents.
The company said Sonnet 5.5 is 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and uses tokens at a significantly slower rate. Sonnet 5 was introduced about three months ago with a focus on cost-efficient agent deployment.
Anthropic’s benchmarks show Sonnet 5.5 outperforming Opus 5.5 on agentic coding tasks. The company attributed this in part to the model’s ability to run multiple agents without exceeding cost limits, although Sonnet remains below Opus in Anthropic’s model lineup.
Anthropic also said Sonnet 5.5 has cyber capabilities comparable to Opus 5. As a result, it will receive the same cyber safeguards applied to Fable and Opus.
The company plans to release a new version of Haiku, its smallest model, in the coming weeks, but has not announced a specific date.
