Tencent Holdings plans to allocate most of an upcoming bond issue worth about $5 billion to artificial intelligence-related capital expenditure, according to the company’s investor briefing.
The planned issuance is expected to include $1.5 billion to $2 billion in dollar-denominated notes, along with 20 billion to 25 billion yuan, equivalent to roughly $3 billion to $3.7 billion, through offshore yuan bonds.
The company told investors that the proceeds would mainly fund AI-related capital spending, including purchases of advanced chips, as well as general corporate purposes. Tencent also said it does not currently plan to issue new shares or convertible bonds.
The move comes as Tencent increases spending on AI and computing to compete with companies including ByteDance and Alibaba. Its investment in AI and computing projects reached 52.8 billion yuan in the second quarter of 2026, up 176% year-on-year, resulting in negative free cash flow of 13.8 billion yuan.
Market estimates suggest Tencent’s capital expenditure will remain elevated through the end of 2026 and into 2027, potentially exceeding 200 billion yuan annually.
