Saudi Arabia Launches It’s AI Campaign to Combat Deepfakes

Saudi Arabia has launched a public awareness campaign aimed at helping people identify and respond to AI-generated deepfakes.

The “It’s AI” campaign was launched by the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA) and the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) as part of the Kingdom’s Year of Artificial Intelligence 2026.

The campaign highlights how AI can create convincing images, videos and audio that replicate people’s appearances and voices. It warns that deepfakes can contribute to misinformation, fraud, identity theft and reputational damage.

According to the announcement, the campaign will offer guidance on protecting personal data, faces and voices, recognising signs of manipulation, and checking original and trusted sources. The authorities are urging people not to treat viral content as authentic simply because it looks or sounds convincing, and to avoid sharing controversial material before verifying it.

SDAIA and CST said the initiative is part of efforts to promote safe and responsible use of AI, with verification and critical thinking positioned as the public’s first line of defence.

The campaign follows a reported case last year in which the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property fined an individual SR9,000 ($2,400) for modifying and publishing another person’s photograph without consent under the existing Copyright Law.
