The International University of Rabat (UIR) has signed an agreement with Morocco’s Family Business Institute (IEF-Maroc) and Moroccan Institute of Directors (IMA) to launch a certificate program focused on family business governance.
Signed on November 4, the partnership also includes Spain’s ESADE Business School through ESADE Executive Education as an academic partner. The nine-day program will cover directors’ responsibilities, board decision-making, risk management, internal controls and growth financing. It will also address succession planning and decision-making across family, ownership and management roles.
The program is designed for directors, executives, current and future shareholders, and advisers. Participants who complete it will receive a certificate jointly signed by the four partner institutions, according to the announcement.
UIR said the initiative builds on its governance training experience, which has reached more than 1,200 participants since 2012. IEF-Maroc President Kacem Bennani-Smires said succession and inheritance disputes can create management challenges for family-owned companies and, in some cases, contribute to business closures.
Family-owned companies represent 93% of Morocco’s entrepreneurial sector, employ 65% of the national workforce and generate nearly 60% of added value, according to figures cited by IEF-Maroc.
