Apple has announced two new processors, the M5 Ultra and M6, which will power its latest Mac mini and Mac Studio computers.
The M5 Ultra combines two dual-die M5 Max chips into Apple’s first quad-die processor. The company said it is designed for demanding workloads including 3D rendering, visual effects and advanced AI models. It offers up to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU and 1.2 TB/s of unified memory bandwidth, 50% more than the M3 Ultra.
The M6 is aimed more at everyday users and developers. Built on a 2nm process, it includes a 12-core CPU, a dual 16-core Neural Engine and additional CPU and GPU cores. According to Apple, it delivers nearly 30% higher peak GPU compute for AI than the M5, improving prompt processing for on-device large language models.
Apple said developers can run and fine-tune large AI models locally using its developer tools, Foundation Models and App Intents, as well as their own models.
The new Mac mini starts at $899 and is available for preorder, with shipments scheduled after September 22.
