Commercial Bank of Dubai Joins CBMT Sandbox to Test Tokenised Deposits

Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) has joined the Commercial Bank Money Token (CBMT) network, becoming the first lender outside Europe to participate, according to the bank.

CBD will initially enter the CBMT Sandbox, which opened in Frankfurt in November 2025. The bank will work with participating lenders and technology companies UDPN and GFT to test cross-border payments, trade settlement, treasury operations and working capital planning.

CBMT enables banks to settle business payments using tokenised deposits. Unlike stablecoins issued outside the banking system, these tokens remain on a bank’s balance sheet and follow the same rules as conventional deposits.

Led by the German banking industry body Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft, the network includes Commerzbank, DZ Bank, Helaba and UniCredit. BNP Paribas, ABN AMRO and DNB also joined this year.

The company said the tests will follow applicable national regulations and do not commit CBD to a commercial launch. The initiative is intended to explore faster and more transparent payments between Europe and the Gulf, including for corporate and institutional clients.
