OpenAI will begin showing visual display ads alongside images generated by ChatGPT later this month, initially in the US.
The ads will feature products and services from an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI said they will be clearly labeled and will not influence ChatGPT’s responses.
The launch expands the advertising business OpenAI introduced earlier this year for free and lower-cost subscription tiers, which later expanded to India. The company is positioning visual placements as a way for advertisers to reach users through imagery, with plans to eventually target ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users as the product rolls out globally.
OpenAI is also expanding its ad measurement and partner network. The group includes attribution providers such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Singular and Kochava, alongside full-funnel measurement firms including Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.
The company said it is working with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on geo-based advertising experiments, while DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are supporting pilots to assess brand suitability in the ChatGPT ad environment.
