PIF-Backed Scopely Takes Strategic Stake in Chinese Game Studio Bokura

Scopely, the US gaming company owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund-backed Savvy Games Group, has acquired a strategic stake in Chinese multiplayer game studio Bokura.

The transaction was completed through Scopely’s Asian arm in Singapore on September 23. Financial terms were not disclosed, and neither company has issued an official announcement, according to the report.

Bokura is developing Star Resonance, an open-world game based on the Japanese-licensed Blue Protocol. The title is currently being developed internally ahead of a global release across multiple platforms.

The deal points to Scopely’s growing interest in mid-core and hardcore games, beyond its earlier focus on casual titles such as Monopoly GO! The company has also expanded through acquisitions, including work connected to Pokémon GO, and is seeking studios with deeper and more creative content, according to the report.

Tencent already holds a 20% stake in Bokura. Its local distribution and licensing reach could complement Scopely’s international publishing and user-acquisition capabilities.
