Qatar Investment Authority Backs $349M Fund to Fuel Spanish Tech and Green Growth

The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, has partnered with Spain’s state-owned COFIDES to establish a joint €300 million (approximately $349 million) fund. The initiative is designed to support Spanish companies leading the green and digital transitions and drive technical innovation.

A Strategic Play in the Spanish Market

The new vehicle, named the Ispania Growth Fund, will be managed by the Spanish private equity firm Portobello Capital, which currently oversees more than €4.5 billion in assets.

The fund will target investments in high-growth SMEs operating within sectors critical to the future of the Spanish economy. Its core objectives include creating new job opportunities, accelerating regional development, and enhancing the resilience of Spain’s corporate sector against economic challenges.

Qatari Confidence in Spain’s Economic Future

The partnership signals a strong vote of confidence from Qatar in the Spanish market’s potential and its ongoing economic transformation.

“The partnership with COFIDES is part of our support for companies driving the economic transformation in Spain and underscores QIA’s confidence in the strength of the Spanish economy,” stated Mohammed Saif Al-Suwaidi, CEO of Qatar Investment Authority.

Spain’s Push for Global Investment

For Spain, the collaboration is a key part of a broader strategy to attract international capital into its most innovative sectors.

Ángela Pérez, CEO of COFIDES, described the initiative as “an important milestone in the fund’s strategy to attract international investment and expand cooperation with global partners.” She also noted the success of their existing FOCO fund as an effective tool for channeling investment into innovative projects within Spain.
