Shopify is allowing browser-based AI agents to complete purchases on its merchants’ websites, moving beyond product search and cart building.
The company said its WebMCP support now covers checkout, including Shop Pay. With the buyer’s authorization, agents can read and update checkout details, then submit the transaction without relying on screenshots or scraping web pages.
The update adds three tools: get_checkout to inspect an order, update_checkout to change details such as the delivery option or customer address, and complete_checkout to place the order after approval.
The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, according to Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager focused on agentic commerce at the company.
Shopify already offers a hosted Model Context Protocol server for agent interactions between systems. WebMCP is designed for agents operating inside a buyer’s browser. Both use Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol, which supports product discovery, cart creation and checkout.
AI agents including Muse and Instinct have direct Shopify partnerships for agentic commerce. Shopify announced its partnership with Instinct alongside the checkout update.
