Tesla has unveiled a redesigned Roadster featuring rocket-style thrusters and said production could begin in 2028, more than a decade after the next-generation electric sports car was first announced.
The white two-seater was demonstrated at a SpaceX test site in Texas, where it drove upside down on a ramp, flipped in the air and landed using built-in thrusters. It later jumped over a truck and other vehicles during the presentation.
According to the company, the Roadster can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than one second, reach a top speed of more than 230 mph and travel over 300 miles on a single charge.
Tesla has not disclosed final pricing. Its reservation page listed a Performance version with a $50,000 deposit and a Thrust version with acceleration thrusters requiring a $250,000 deposit. A Rocket variant, described as invite-only, is designed as a single-seat model with a full flight system.
The launch comes as Tesla focuses more heavily on self-driving technology and robotics. The Roadster was first revealed in 2017, with deliveries originally expected in 2020.
