Three Egyptian startups supported by the European Union for Decent Life project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Egypt with EU funding, have secured top positions in the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects.
The startups were recognised for solutions that recycle agricultural waste and turn it into products with economic value.
Sustainability Pro, based in Qena, won first place in the startups category for producing animal feed from sugarcane waste. Bioconvision, from Sohag, took first place in the category focused on supporting rural women and addressing climate change. Its model uses black soldier fly larvae to process waste and produce feed protein.
Also from Sohag, Nadhara Silk won third place in the startups category for converting waste from silkworm cocoons into cosmetics.
According to the announcement, the results are part of the project’s work to support green entrepreneurship in Upper Egypt, in cooperation with Egypt’s ministries of local development, environment, agriculture and social solidarity. The project’s first phase helped establish 20 startups and supported the development of ideas into sustainable businesses serving rural communities through jobs and income opportunities.
