US-based semiconductor startup Ayar Labs has secured USD 500 million in a Series E funding round to scale its optical interconnect technology, a critical component for the future of AI infrastructure. The round was led by Neuberger Berman and featured significant participation from the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), marking a strategic investment from the MENA region into the global deep-tech landscape.
Powering The Next Wave Of AI
Ayar Labs is tackling a fundamental bottleneck in high-performance computing. As AI models become more complex, the traditional copper-based electrical connections used to link processors are hitting a physical limit, consuming excessive power and hindering data transfer speeds. The company’s co-packaged optics (CPO) solution replaces these copper links with optical connectivity, enabling massive performance and efficiency gains for next-generation AI data centers.
“AI infrastructure is hitting a power wall driven by interconnect inefficiency. As bandwidth demands explode, copper becomes the bottleneck — consuming too much power and limiting AI throughput per watt and per dollar,” said Mark Wade, CEO and co-founder of Ayar Labs. “Co-packaged optics overcomes these barriers, enabling thousands of GPUs to operate as a unified system. This funding fuels our ability to meet the demands of hyperscale AI.”
Qatar’s Strategic AI Investment
The participation of the Qatar Investment Authority signals a growing trend of MENA sovereign wealth funds strategically investing in core technologies that will power the next industrial revolution. By backing a leader in the semiconductor and AI infrastructure space, QIA gains exposure to a foundational technology essential for developing national and regional AI capabilities, aligning with Qatar’s long-term vision for economic diversification and technological leadership.
A Global Syndicate Of Investors
The funding round attracted a powerful consortium of global investors from both the financial and strategic sectors. New investors include AKR Invest, Insight Partners, Sequoia Global Equities, and 1789 Capital.
The round also saw participation from key industry players such as Alchip Technologies and MediaTek, who join existing strategic investors including AMD Ventures and NVIDIA. This broad support underscores the industry’s confidence in Ayar Labs’ technology and its potential to become a standard for AI hardware. The fresh capital will be used to scale high-volume production, accelerate deployment, and expand the company’s global operations.
