Mauritania Launches New Entrepreneurship Hub to Finance 1,000 SMEs

Mauritania’s government has launched the “Entrepreneurship Development Support Window,” a new initiative in Nouakchott aimed at bolstering the country’s small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. The hub, operated by the National Employment Agency, Tachghil, is designed to streamline access to financing and provide critical support for local entrepreneurs.

A Strategic Push for SME Growth

The initiative was inaugurated by Mohamed Abdallah Ould Louly, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Employment, Sports, and Civil Service, and Abdallahi Souleymane Cheikh Sidia, Minister of Economic Affairs and Development.

In his remarks, Minister Ould Louly framed the launch as a strategic pivot for the country. He stated the goal is to move beyond supporting individual projects and focus on developing sustainable institutions capable of creating lasting jobs. He highlighted the crucial role of SMEs, which he noted contribute between 70% and 80% of total employment in developing economies.

The new hub will guide entrepreneurs in preparing their funding applications and offer capacity-building programs both before and after their ventures are established.

Backing the Initiative with Concrete Agreements

The launch event included the signing of three key agreements to put the hub’s mission into action.

The first agreement outlines a plan to finance 1,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises. The second focuses on improving access to the formal banking system for these businesses. The third agreement is dedicated to human resources support, providing specialized training and assistance with professional integration.

EU Support and Improving the Business Climate

Abdel Vettah Abdel Vettah, Director General of Tachghil, explained that the hub reflects the government’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and enhancing the national business environment.

The initiative also has international backing. Ben Pandan Brock, Head of Cooperation at the European Union delegation, described the hub as a “practical and tangible step” toward empowering youth and simplifying their access to project financing. He affirmed the EU’s continued support for initiatives that strengthen Mauritania’s business climate and build the capabilities of its young entrepreneurs.
