Morocco Accelerates World Cup 2030 Plans With $850M Transport Infrastructure Push

Morocco is injecting an additional MAD 8 billion ($850 million) into its infrastructure development this year, signaling a major push in its preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The investment targets critical transport links as the North African kingdom readies itself for a massive influx of international visitors for the global tournament, which it will host alongside Spain and Portugal.

Quick Facts

  • Additional $850M allocated for 2026 projects.
  • Focus on rail, airport, port, and road upgrades.
  • Part of a broader $41B national infrastructure plan.

High-Speed Rail and Airport Expansion on the Agenda

The fresh funding was confirmed by Transport Minister Abdul Samad Qayuh, who stated that the allocation covers a wide range of projects essential for the country’s mobility infrastructure. The government expects to finalize around 151 new projects with this capital.

“Most of them are for rail projects,” Qayuh noted in a statement published by Morocco’s official news agency.

This includes advancing a high-speed train line designed to connect Morocco’s key northwestern cities, a project vital for moving large crowds efficiently during the tournament. The investment complements the $4 billion already awarded to 148 infrastructure projects in 2025, underscoring the consistent pace of development.

Part of a Broader $41B National Strategy

This latest financial commitment is a component of a much larger vision. Last October, Morocco’s Economy and Finance Minister, Nadia Alaoui, confirmed the cabinet had approved $41 billion in total infrastructure spending in the run-up to the World Cup.

“This big investment effort will be directed at funding infrastructure projects in various sectors and areas,” Alaoui told parliament at the time.

She highlighted that priority would be given to transport and logistics, with a specific “emphasis on speeding up airport construction and expansion, bolstering the national airline’s fleet and completion of rail projects, mainly the high-speed train project.”
