Egypt’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA) has launched the “Egyptian Cotton Festival” initiative, a new program designed to support small and medium enterprises across the country’s historic cotton value chain. The move, made in cooperation with the Cairo Governorate and the Egyptian Marketing Studies Foundation, aims to connect local producers with major brands and expand their reach in both domestic and international markets.
Quick Facts
- Supports SMEs in Egypt’s cotton value chain.
- Aims to enhance production and marketing efficiency.
- Focuses on expanding local and international market access.
A Strategic Push for Local Industry
The initiative directly aligns with directives from Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to bolster the capabilities of domestic industries. Bassel Rahmy, CEO of MSMEDA, stated that the program is part of a wider government strategy to support export potential and promote locally manufactured products that can replace imports competitively.
Rahmy highlighted that Egypt’s cotton sector is a promising industry that MSMEDA is keen to support, alongside other key areas like Damietta’s furniture manufacturing, handicrafts, and heritage industries.
Unlocking Export and Financial Pathways
The program will be implemented through several pillars coordinated by MSMEDA. Key components include introducing businesses to export mechanisms, helping entrepreneurs navigate required procedures, and supporting them in obtaining certifications needed for international markets.
Participating enterprises will also receive guidance on benefiting from incentives under the MSME Development Law No. 152 of 2020 and Law No. 6 of 2025, which offers tax benefits. A central goal is to strengthen partnerships between larger corporations and smaller enterprises, creating a more integrated industrial ecosystem.
Restoring Egyptian Cotton’s Global Standing
Mahmoud Hassan, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Egyptian Marketing Studies Foundation, framed the initiative as a crucial step toward restoring the global prestige of Egyptian cotton products. He emphasized that the collaboration with MSMEDA and the Cairo Governorate provides an effective model for helping entrepreneurs improve product quality, access new markets, and increase exports.
Hassan added that his foundation aims to drive significant improvements in marketing and institutional practices while promoting Egyptian products at home and abroad to enhance their competitiveness.
