Meta Rolls Out AI Assistant in Threads Direct Messages Worldwide

1 Min Read

Meta is rolling out its Meta AI assistant inside Threads direct messages, allowing users to chat with the chatbot privately without leaving the app.

The update expands Meta AI’s role on Threads. In selected markets, users had previously been able to interact with the assistant through public posts and replies. The company said the direct-message feature will begin rolling out globally, although availability may vary as updates are introduced gradually.

Users can ask questions, request information and seek recommendations from Meta AI in private conversations. They can also share Threads posts, images, videos and links, then ask follow-up questions or request more detail about the content.

Meta AI is already available in direct messages on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Adding it to Threads gives Meta a more consistent assistant experience across its platforms and supports its broader competition with services such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Meta is also testing the assistant in public Threads feeds in a limited number of markets. Users who want to reduce AI-generated content can mute the @meta.ai account, mark posts as “Not interested” or hide Meta AI replies under their posts.
