Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) will inaugurate a joint Egyptian-British center on August 17 to apply artificial intelligence and virtual heritage technologies to cultural preservation and scientific research.
The British-Egyptian Center for Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Heritage Technologies (BECAIVE) will be based at NRIAG in Egypt, with its UK headquarters at the University of York’s Center for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage, according to the institute.
The center will support research collaboration, technical capacity building and the development of AI applications for Egyptology and archaeology. It will also create a digital repository and database covering archaeological sites, artifacts and museum collections.
BECAIVE will use digitization, 3D modelling and virtual reconstruction to document heritage sites and develop specialized research projects, the institute said. It also plans to work with universities, museums and research institutions in Egypt and abroad to advance digital heritage and AI applications.
