Jordan is using artificial intelligence to monitor water networks, detect leaks and reduce losses through a US government-funded project led by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Water Authority of Jordan.
Water and Irrigation Minister Raed Abu Saud and Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Minister Sami Smirat were briefed on the Smart Transformation Project for Water and Wastewater Services Management. Abu Saud described it as the first project of its kind in Jordan, with pilot areas already recording lower network pressure and reduced water losses.
The project brings together supervisory control systems, smart meters, enterprise resource planning systems and geographic information systems through a central database. The platform is designed to provide real-time analysis for operational decisions, replacing fragmented reports and manual processes.
Authorities are also using consumption and demand data to identify supply imbalances, forecast demand, prioritise maintenance and respond more quickly to complaints. The work is particularly relevant to Amman, which accounts for more than half of Jordan’s water subscribers.
The next phase will focus on linking data systems, expanding digital infrastructure and strengthening national capabilities in AI, data analysis and the Internet of Things. Jordan has just 61 cubic metres of renewable freshwater per person annually, according to the announcement, making network efficiency a critical priority.
