Anthropic will add watermarks to text generated by its AI models, including Claude, as it moves to comply with European Union transparency requirements.
The company confirmed the plan in an updated support page. The EU AI Act’s Transparency Code, which took effect on August 2, requires AI-generated or edited content to be marked in a way that other systems can identify.
Anthropic said models released after August 2 will automatically watermark computer-generated text and files. For files, it will use the C2PA open standard. The company also plans to extend the technology to older models.
According to Anthropic, the watermark is embedded in the text and can remain when users copy and paste it, as well as through some editing. The feature will apply at the model level across products including the Claude platform API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude Tag.
Anthropic has not clarified how much editing is required to remove the watermark. The company is among several technology firms that have committed to following the EU’s code, alongside Black Forest Labs, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Synthesia.
