The Arab Economic Council in Cairo is discussing measures to support the Palestinian economy and advance recovery and reconstruction efforts in countries affected by prolonged conflicts.
The session is the first since Nabil Fahmy became secretary-general of the Arab League, with a focus on strengthening the economic and social pillars of Arab integration, according to the announcement.
The agenda includes proposals to support labor inspection bodies and develop labor markets in Syria. It also covers support for Yemen’s Industrial and Commercial Institute to boost exports, local production and access to international markets.
Food security is another key focus, including the implementation of Arab programs for sustainable food security, agricultural development, pastoral resource management and aquaculture. The discussions come as climate change and water scarcity put additional pressure on the region’s food systems.
The council is also reviewing progress on the Greater Arab Free Trade Area and the proposed Arab Customs Union, alongside topics for the 35th Arab Summit scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in 2026.
The session is expected to produce recommendations on Arab cooperation, development goals and reconstruction financing amid rising food and energy costs and disrupted supply chains.
