Kuwait has performed more than 1,300 robotic-assisted procedures across five hospitals and specialist centers as it expands advanced and remote surgery capabilities.
Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital accounts for 1,145 procedures since launching its program in 2019, covering specialties including urology, bariatric, colorectal, liver, gynecological and orthopedic surgery. Its orthopedic department has completed more than 115 robot-assisted procedures since January 2024.
New Jahra Hospital reached 155 robotic operations by September 6, 2026, after starting its program in April 2025. Chest Diseases Hospital has used the technology for 30 thoracic and 25 cardiac procedures.
The country has also completed 15 remote robotic procedures at Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Kidney and Urology Center since December 2024. Twelve involved international teams, including surgeons operating remotely from Shanghai, Strasbourg, Muscat and Padua.
In September 2025, a Kuwaiti team performed remote surgery on a patient in Brazil, while a Brazilian team later operated on a patient in Kuwait. The procedures covered 12,034.92 kilometers and were recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest distance between a patient and surgeon.
According to the Ministry of Health, further expansion will depend on investment in equipment, training, maintenance, secure connectivity and digital infrastructure. Patient consent and clear communication about risks, responsibilities and alternatives are also required.
