Google is testing a new Gemini feature that can call businesses on a user’s behalf, starting with Pixel 11 owners who subscribe to Gemini in the U.S.
Called “Call for Me,” the feature will initially be available through the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android. Gemini can call a store to check whether a product is in stock, make a restaurant reservation, reschedule an appointment or place items on hold.
The AI can introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold and manage the conversation. Users can follow the call through a live transcript and take over at any time. The feature will use the user’s own phone number and can share personal information approved by the user.
“Call for Me” builds on Google’s earlier AI calling tools, including “Ask for Me,” “Hold for Me,” “Talk to a Live Rep” and “Direct My Call.” According to the company, the latest experiment is launching at a small scale because real-world conversations can be nuanced, giving Google time to improve the feature before a broader rollout.
