Algeria’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises is collaborating with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and regional venture capital firm Flat6Labs to upgrade the country’s startup support infrastructure. The partnership, operating under the StartAlgeria initiative, is designed to accelerate early-stage entrepreneurship by enhancing the capabilities of local incubators and accelerators.
Quick Facts
- Partners: StartAlgeria, IFC, and Flat6Labs.
- Goal: Strengthen local startup incubators and support organizations.
- Focus: Founders at the pre-seed and seed stages.
Building a Stronger Support System for Founders
The StartAlgeria initiative aims to equip Algeria’s ecosystem enablers with practical tools and international best practices to improve the quality of support for new companies.
As part of the program, a delegation of experts led by Yehia Houry, CEO of Flat6Labs, visited Algeria to kick off a series of capacity-building activities. The visit included the launch of a pilot program for local incubators, technical consultations, and workshops with key stakeholders. These efforts are focused on helping support organizations provide more effective guidance to founders during the critical early stages of building a business.
Zeroing In on Pre-Seed and Seed Stages
The partnership places a strong emphasis on supporting founders at the pre-seed and seed stages, a period where mentorship, market validation, and investor readiness are crucial. Startups at this level often require hands-on help with refining business models, understanding customer needs, and preparing for future funding rounds.
By strengthening the capabilities of these startup enablers, StartAlgeria plans to build a more sustainable pipeline of high-potential companies and improve their readiness for local, regional, and international expansion.
Fueling Algeria’s National Innovation Agenda
This collaboration is part of Algeria’s broader strategy to diversify its economy and develop a more robust knowledge-based ecosystem. Through programs like StartAlgeria, the government is working to create a more supportive environment for tech-driven businesses.
The initiative also aligns with Algeria’s ambition to become a more competitive innovation hub in North Africa by improving the connections between founders, incubators, investors, and global partners.
