Etsy Launches ChatGPT App, Betting on AI for E-commerce Discovery

4 Min Read

Etsy announced the launch of its native app within ChatGPT, introducing a new conversational channel for shoppers to navigate its massive catalog of over 100 million items. The move signals a deeper commitment to generative AI as a core pillar of its product discovery strategy.

Quick Facts

  • New app enables natural language shopping prompts.
  • Part of a broader AI push, including on-site tools.
  • Follows strong Q1 2026 earnings report.

From Keywords to Conversations

The new integration is designed to move beyond the constraints of traditional keyword searches. Instead of typing “wooden coffee table,” a user can now prompt ChatGPT with a more natural request, such as, “Help me find a Mother’s Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening.”

Currently live in beta, the feature works by tagging @Etsy in a prompt. The app then surfaces relevant product listings directly within the chat interface, allowing users to browse, compare, and click through to the main Etsy site to complete a purchase.

This new app replaces a previous experiment with ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout integration, which ended in March. Reports suggested the earlier feature did not generate significant sales volume, prompting Etsy to pivot toward building a more integrated native app experience.

Etsy’s Bigger AI Picture

This launch is part of a wider AI strategy for the e-commerce giant. The company is also testing a conversational gift assistant on its own platform, designed to act as a personal shopper by guiding users through a series of questions to narrow down gift ideas.

The push extends to its sellers, with a suite of AI-powered tools to help generate product titles, descriptions, and draft messages to buyers. In 2024, Etsy also introduced a “Designed” label to help customers identify AI-generated artwork, aiming for greater transparency on the platform. The AI focus comes on the heels of a strong Q1 2026 earnings report, where Etsy surpassed revenue expectations with $631 million and saw its active buyers grow to 86.6 million for the first time in two years.

What This Means for MENA E-commerce

While Etsy is a global player, its heavy investment in conversational AI offers a clear signal for the MENA e-commerce market. Regional giants and niche platforms alike are under increasing pressure to enhance user experience beyond the standard search bar.

For MENA startups, this move highlights the growing accessibility of integrating large language models (LLMs) to create more personalized and intuitive shopping journeys. As customers in markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia become more accustomed to AI-driven interactions, local e-commerce platforms may need to accelerate their own AI roadmaps to stay competitive, particularly in categories like bespoke goods, gifts, and artisanal products where discovery is key.
