OpenAI’s next hardware product could be a donut-shaped AI smart speaker priced between $300 and $400, according to a Bloomberg report cited by TechCrunch.
The device is expected to be portable, allowing users to move it around the home and place it on surfaces such as a bedside table or kitchen counter. Sources described it as being made from high-quality metal with a premium design and distinct moving parts.
OpenAI is developing the product with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by Jony Ive. The device could launch in 2027, although the company has not confirmed a release date or pricing.
The reported price would place it well above many existing smart speakers, with Amazon’s devices ranging from $40 to $240, according to the report. OpenAI’s entry into hardware would give ChatGPT a more physical presence in users’ homes, but the company would also be entering a market where smart speakers have historically struggled to generate strong profits.
The project adds to OpenAI’s broader push into consumer hardware, despite reported challenges surrounding its development.
