Bridging the Gap Between Startups and Civic Needs
The first day of the Urban Up Hackathon brought together the selected startups for a series of specialized technical and practical sessions. The program is structured around key challenge areas critical to urban development: digital governance and citizen experience, environmental sustainability, and urban planning and the local economy.
These sessions are designed to help founders deepen their understanding of municipal operations and align their tech solutions with the specific needs of Palestinian cities. The hands-on approach encourages teams to build clearer and more implementable products that can directly improve the quality of municipal services for citizens.
Fostering a Localized Innovation Ecosystem
The Urban Up program is a strategic initiative to foster homegrown technological solutions for local problems. The hackathon facilitates direct collaboration between innovators and the municipalities of Nablus, Dura, Al-Eizariya, and Birzeit, ensuring that the developed solutions are grounded in real-world demand.
The initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Inclusive Digital Governance (INDIGO) project, which is implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). This support underscores the program’s goal of turning urban challenges into viable opportunities powered by local innovation.
