Qatar University Develops AI Wearable for Needle-Free Glucose Estimates

Qatar University has developed GlucoWatch, a wearable device that estimates blood glucose levels without finger pricks or blood samples, according to the announcement.

The system uses AI to analyse heart rate signals, blood pressure readings and selected demographic data. Results are sent to a connected mobile app, which can alert users when estimated glucose levels fall outside medically approved ranges and allow them to share health data with family members or healthcare providers.

The project was led by Qatar University researcher and inventor Dr Khalid Abualsaud, with contributions from computer engineering students. It began as a graduation project before developing into a research initiative involving prototype design, AI model development, mobile app creation and initial validation against reference measurements.

A US patent application for the technology, US20240138776A, has been published. The team is expanding its database, improving the AI models and developing a more advanced version of the device. It is also pursuing partnerships with healthcare and industrial organisations while working toward scientific validation and regulatory approval.

GlucoWatch won a gold medal at the International Invention Fair of the Middle East in Kuwait in 2023.
