Samsung Electronics reported a 19-fold year-on-year increase in operating profit for the second quarter, as demand for AI chips helped offset a loss in its mobile business.
The South Korean technology group posted operating profit of 89.5 trillion won ($61.98 billion) for the April-to-June period, broadly matching its earlier estimate of 89.4 trillion won. Revenue rose 130% to 171.5 trillion won.
Samsung’s semiconductor division generated 89.2 trillion won in operating profit, more than 250 times its result a year earlier. The company said demand from AI data centres is expected to keep memory chip supplies tight during the second half of 2026.
Higher chip prices, however, weighed on the mobile division, which recorded a 700 billion won loss, its first quarterly loss. Samsung said server demand, continued AI infrastructure investment and wider adoption of agentic AI could support the memory business, even as demand for mobile devices and PCs moderates.
Samsung shares gained 1.8% in early trading following the results, compared with a 0.5% rise in the broader market.
