Jordan has exceeded several targets under a World Bank-funded project supporting women’s economic opportunities, with major gains in entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, flexible work and childcare.
The project recorded 2,026 new businesses owned or led by women by July 2026, more than double its target of 1,000 by June 2028. The number of basic bank accounts, bank accounts and electronic wallets held by women also reached 3,338,807, surpassing the target of 3,197,375 set for December 2027.
The $226M project, approved in March 2024 and scheduled to close in June 2028, has disbursed $154.58M so far, according to the World Bank’s latest implementation report. Its objectives include improving women’s access to employment, finance, transport and childcare.
Flexible work arrangements have been adopted by 122 companies, above the target of 100, while 241 women have benefited from them. In childcare, 222 nurseries have been registered or licensed, and 3,760 eligible mothers have received support.
The share of women in reported individual credit facilities rose to 23.15%, compared with a target of 25%. The report also said Jordan’s child enrolment rate in nurseries reached 3.9%, close to the 4% target set for 2028.
